What do you think of Obama’s stand against the student loan free lunch given to banks?
Federal student loans are either directly financed by the government or financed by private banks. Those private banks, however, get paid by the government if the student defaults on the loan.
So banks are basically making profits with very tiny risk.
Obama has stated he wants to cut the middle man out and save the government/tax payer millions in dollars in the process. He also stated the banking lobbyiest are preparing for war but that he is not going to back down.

I begin paying back in a month, and have not received anything in the mail yet regarding consolidation…all I have gotten were individual remidners for my stafford loans…I’m wondering, will they contact me? Or do I need to contact them?
Also, is it worth it to consolidate if all I have is abotu $ 18-20k in Stafford Loans and abotu $ 2-3k in substitute loans?

Student Loan Consolidation, I have about k in student loans?
I have about $ 60k in student loans. I only worked a few years after graduation and am now staying home with my 3 kids. I do not see how I can go back to work anytime soon as all my children are 2 and under and will not be in school anytime soon. We cannot afford to pay on my loans with my husband’s salary.
They have been on deferment for soooo long.
So what happens if I do not pay them? I know my interest keeps going up and up and up.
I’m not looking for advice telling me to go to work. It is not an option for us at this time.

I recently graduated from college, about a tiny over half a year ago, I am yet to consolidate any of my loans because i’m scarred to lock in my loans at some outrageous interest, my loans are as follows,around: 29,000 in federal 78,000 in private student loans, which would make my payments unconsolidated around 1500 a month, and i cant make that sort of payment nor I think anyone that has recently graduate can, I want to know if there is any place that i can consolidate both of these loans where I can actually make a payment. I do want to pay but I just cant make 1000 dollar payments each month. I have had no help with paying for my school nor from the government nor from my parents. what am I suppose to do? I did a forbearance on my loans but it ends at the end of this month and I still have not been able to find a lender that will consolidate my private loans at something affordable. Nor can I find any information on the internet.

ill make this story short. I was an alcoholic that turned my life around. I had no home when starting school, and a friends place to stay temporarily. I got into Devry and took out some loans to get myself through school, and have a cheap place to stay. I managed to really do good and graduated Summa Cum Laude of my class. (yea i know, but it was a huge deal to me). So then I decided to stay and get my master’s with further loans. I graduated Magna cum laude from there. Long story short, I could not get a job at my field, but I took an entry level position at a very popular insurance company (fortune 200 business). I worked my way up, but nothing in my field. I make roughly 30,000 right now with 60,000 in student loans all Title IV. I cannot seem to make my payments because they are too high monthly. I did the math and its about 850.00. I have a home note, and a wife and child now. But I am worried about my future. I have been paying some loans in the amount of about 220.00 a month since i’ve graduated, but when the other loans come off forbearance, it will be hard for me. What are my options. I am so lost. Sorry for the bad grammar, at work and I had to type fast. Thanks for any help.
